Airtel Uganda Refunds 1% Mobile Money Tax

Mobile network operator (MNO), Airtel, has been reported to have begun providing full 1% refunds on mobile money taxes paid by subscribers in Uganda which was originally collected pursuant to the country's parliament passing of a controversial 1% mobile money tax which was allegedly originally intended to be set at 0.05% and faced substantial opposition in its entirety. While some Airtel customers have announced on social media that they had received refunds, the company has not yet issued a formal statement with rivals MTN and Africell Uganda yet to make an announcement.

Earlier, the finance minister was reported to have announced a 5 billion shilling tax collection. But the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has shared that it is unclear exactly how much tax has been collected.
