Parliament of Sri Lanka - Mediation Boards (Amendment) Act, No. 15 of 1997


The Parliament of Sri Lanka's Mediation Boards (Amendment) Act, No. 15 of 1997 provides for the expanded use and augmented organization and functions of mediation boards in the country. Specifically, the amendment now gives disputants the option to select a pre-constituted board, in addition to the previous procedure of have each side choose one board member for the 3-person panel. The act also extends the time limit of board decisions for disputes from 30 days to 60 days, however decisions for offenses remains at 30 days. In addition, a certificate of non-settlement for unresolved disputes may be given in evidence in any action or proceeding instituted in any court. Lastly, the amendment updates various legal definitions and language as outlined in the original act.
