Telecommunications Act 1997 (as amended in 2016)


This act of law enacted by the Commonwealth of Australia includes amendments up to March, 2016. It promotes the long-term interests of end users of carriage services , improves the efficiency and international competitiveness of the Australian telecommunications industry, and establishes the availability of accessible and affordable carriage services, to enhance the welfare of all Australians.

This law seeks for all standard telephone services and payphones to become reasonably accessible whilst also ensuring this supply remains efficient, economical, and practical. It ensures services are supplied under standards that meet the social, industrial and commercial needs of the Australian community.

This law promotes the development of the technical capabilities and skills of the Australian telecommunications industry, the development of the industry's export oriented activities, and the expansion of research and development of the Australian telecommunications industry.
